RARE 1923 CHANDLER-CLEVELAND AUTOMOBILE

This car has been lovingly cared for and has not seen snow or rain since the restoration. It has been kept in a heated garage and runs perfectly. It comes with an additional motor and drive train and you would be the third owner of this true rare classic. The original owner left it to his son when he passed away in 2005, and it was sold to a member of the local Chandler-Cleveland Club who had it restored. You would be the third owner of this American classic. We would like to see it go to a true collector who could appreciate this unique example of classic automotive history. It was featured in the April Hemmings Motor News edition in their article about Chandlers. This is a rare opportunity to own an amazing American iconic automobile classic.

There were over 1800 automobile manufacturers in the United States from 1896 to 1930. Past that point very few survived and the Chandler-Cleveland was one of those very special car companies. Formed in 1913 by Frederick C. Chandler in Cleveland, Ohio the Chandler Motor Company was determined to produce well designed good looking cars for the average middle class working American family. Chandler set out to achieve this by building his own engines, body and chassis. They maintained a low overhead and by 1920 had six medium priced models ranging from $2095 to $3585.

Some of the innovative features of the Chandlers produced from 1913 to 1929 included POWER BRAKES, ONE SHOT LUBRICATION and SYNCHROMESH TRANSMISSION. Other features were electric starting motor, enclosed silent driving chains, worm-bevel rear axle, Mercedes type Mayo radiator, and clean sleek running boards.

The Cleveland Automobile line was organized by Chandler to produce an even lower cost car and by 1913 several models were available for about $1800. The price was reduced to $1300. By 1916 and the Chandler-Cleveland was the least expensive car on the Market. By 1921 sales and profits were in decline and Frederick C. Chandler decided to close the Cleveland line in 1926 and consolidate the Chandler Motor Company to reduce cost, but he kept many of the Cleveland specifications for the standard Chandler car models to follow.

Unfortunately by 1929 the company had fallen on hard times with a high amount of debt and was acquired by the Chandler’s main competition the HUPP MOTOR WORKS. HUPP needed not only to remove the Chandler as a competitor by could use the manufacturing facilities that had just been built by Chandler for their expansion.
